Husbands tend to initially feel uncomfortable with the thought of home birth. Instead of simply submitting, women need to educate their husbands on the safety of home birth. If there is only one realm in which women ought to have authority, it’s in the realm of childbirth.

The Gift of Waiting

December 31, 2011

With every pregnancy announcement, I have to admit I felt a little twinge of something like envy. How can everyone else be so darn fertile? December 6, 2011

Sex is different now that I’m a mother. Not just in the way that sex feels, because of what my body has gone through, though that too. It’s not that my body has merely changed; it’s that it is a wholly new and different thing.

Why Birthing at Home Rocked

September 12, 2011

Yesterday I shared my birth story. A few weeks ago I explained why I’d chosen a home birth. I can’t possibly know whether choosing to give birth at home helped to make it as great as it was. My labour might have been just as quick and easy in a hospital — I’ll never know [...]

No, my mom didn’t say anything mean or hurtful. Gardening became an emotional issue for me last year. It was my second summer [...]

I’ve also discovered that with many things, the reason folks want you to be afraid is because they have some kind [...]

Ultrasound

February 21, 2011

Few experiences are as surreal and disconcerting as seeing a humanoid creature casually loitering in your abdomen, especially when you can’t feel any of it. The experience treads a fine line between rapturous and downright creepy. (Imagine this creature, pictured above, silently moving around inside of you. Goodness. It would give me the willies if [...]
